Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy Treatment for Unwanted Varicose & Spider Veins

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy begins with an injection of medicated solution directly into inflamed varicose and spider veins. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessels, causing them to collapse and stick together. The blood then clots. Over time, the vessels turn into scar tissue that fades from view. While other treatment centers use a saline solution, Skin And Cancer Institute developed a highly specialized formula that aids in pain reduction during sclerotherapy.

Which problem areas of the body can sclerotherapy treat?

Sclerotherapy is most commonly used to treat varicose veins in the legs and thighs, but the procedure can be performed on most places of the body where varicose veins exist.

Is sclerotherapy right for me?

Sclerotherapy is the perfect noninvasive treatment for adult men and women. Talk to your healthcare specialist about the risks associated with sclerotherapy.

What can I expect the day I receive sclerotherapy treatment?

Your vein specialist will use a very fine needle to inject our specialized formula directly into the targeted veins. You may experience mild discomfort and cramping for one to two minutes, especially when larger veins are injected. The number of veins injected in one session depends on the size and location of the veins. The procedure itself takes approximately 15-30 minutes.

What will recovery be like after I receive sclerotherapy?

After sclerotherapy, you will be able to drive yourself home and resume your regular daily activities. Walking is encouraged, but you must limit strenuous activity for at least three days following the procedure. For three days after treatment, wear support stockings to compress the treated vessels. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, or other anti-inflammatory drugs for at least 48 hours. Tylenol may be used if needed. Also avoid hot baths, hot compresses, saunas, and direct exposure to sunlight. You may shower, but make sure the water is as cold as you can tolerate.

When will I see results from sclerotherapy and how long does it last?

With each treatment, up to 80% of visible varicose and spider veins will be destroyed. It may take a few treatments to reach optimal results.

In general, spider veins respond in three to six weeks, and larger veins respond in three to four months. If the veins respond to the treatment, they will not reappear. However, new veins may appear at the same rate as before. This will require maintenance injections for optimal results.
